Scaling European Solid State

Official duration: April 2025 - September 2027

Advancing a laboratory solid-state cell to an integrated prototype battery pack to strengthen Europe’s battery supply chain.

Project overview: A strategic leap for European battery technology

In a powerful example of local innovation driving European strategy, two Arnhem-based neighbors: battery and energy storage expert, Volstora, and solid-state innovator, Arkimedes, have partnered on the ‘Scaling European Solid State’ project.

Enabled and funded by the European Union via the EFRO Oost program, this collaboration is set to transform a pioneering solid-state cell into a market-ready battery module. The project leverages Volstora’s expertise in rigorous cell testing and battery technology and BMS engineering to validate Arkimedes’ cell technology, bridging the critical gap between laboratory discovery and industrial application.

The need for European cell manufacturing and pack integration

The European Union’s energy transition goals rely heavily on the availability of high-performance, safe, and sustainable battery cells.

Currently, Europe is largely dependent on imported cells, creating supply chain vulnerabilities and economic risks. This project is a direct response to this challenge, aimed at fostering a European manufacturing and supply-chain ecosystem for a critical future technology.

Strategic Impact for the European Energy Sector

This project demonstrates the role of specialized local partnerships in achieving broader European objectives. The collaboration between Arnhem-based companies Volstora and Arkimedes focuses on validating and scaling high-quality cell technology to develop the reliable and safe energy storage solutions that are essential for the energy transition.

A primary objective of the initiative is to establish a foundation for EU cell manufacturing. This strengthens the European economy by reducing reliance on transcontinental imports and lowers the carbon footprint associated with global supply chains. The project serves as a model for creating a more secure and sustainable regional energy future.

Co-financed by the European Union

This project is made possible by the EFRO Oost program. The EFRO 2021-2027 Oost Nederland program strengthens the innovative power of the region and the earning capacity of its business community and contributes to solutions for the energy transition.
